Short answer: No, NFA fingerprints do not expire. Your EFT file can be used indefinitely for unlimited ATF applications.
In This Guide
Do NFA Fingerprints Expire?
No. Your fingerprints are a permanent biometric identifier. They don't change over time (barring severe injury), which means:
- ✓ EFT files have no expiration date
- ✓ Same file works for all future applications
- ✓ No need to re-fingerprint for each NFA item
- ✓ Works for both Form 1 and Form 4
How Long is an EFT File Valid?
Forever. The ATF does not have any time limit on EFT file validity. An EFT file created today will work for applications filed years from now.
What the ATF Requires
- Valid EFT format file
- Clear, readable fingerprints
- Matching applicant identity
Notice what's NOT on that list: an expiration date.
Reusing Your Fingerprints
One EFT file works for:
- ✓ Multiple suppressor purchases
- ✓ SBR Form 1 applications
- ✓ Any NFA Form 4 transfer
- ✓ Different dealers/FFLs
- ✓ Applications filed years apart
Example: A customer who converted their fingerprints in 2020 is still using the same EFT file in 2026 for their 8th suppressor purchase. Same file, no issues.
When You Might Need New Prints
The only situations where you'd need new fingerprints:
1. Lost Your EFT File
If you lose your EFT file and don't have a backup, you'll need to start over. Always save copies in multiple places!
2. Poor Quality Original
If your original prints were low quality and you're having issues, getting new, cleaner prints might help.
3. Severe Hand Injury
If you've had significant scarring or injury to your fingertips since your original prints, you might need new ones.
4. Adding Trust Members
New responsible persons on your NFA trust need THEIR OWN fingerprints. Your existing file only works for you.
The Bottom Line
Convert your fingerprints once, use them forever. There's no expiration, no annual renewal, no re-fingerprinting needed.
