Can I Reuse My EFT File?
One of the biggest advantages of EFT files over physical fingerprint cards is reusability. Here's everything you need to know about using your EFT file for multiple submissions.
Your EFT file can be used for unlimited ATF eForms submissions. It does not expire.
The Short Answer
Once you have an EFT fingerprint file, you can use it for as many ATF Form 1 and Form 4 submissions as you want. The file doesn't expire, and your fingerprints don't change (barring injury). One file, unlimited uses.
This is a major advantage over physical FD-258 cards, which are single-use. Every time you mail a card, it's gone. With EFT, you keep your file forever.
EFT vs Physical Cards: Reusability
| Feature | EFT File | FD-258 Card |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable? | ✓ Unlimited uses | ✗ Single use |
| Expires? | ✓ Never | ✗ N/A (consumed on use) |
| Cost per submission | $0 after initial creation | $10-15 per card set |
| Storage | Digital backup anywhere | Physical storage required |
| Can be copied? | ✓ Yes, keep backups | ✗ No |
What Can I Use My EFT File For?
Your EFT file works for all ATF eForms submissions that require fingerprints:
- Form 1: Application to make a firearm (SBR, SBS, suppressor, AOW)
- Form 4: Application for tax paid transfer (suppressor purchases, etc.)
- Form 5: Tax-exempt transfer (to government, law enforcement)
- Form 20: Application to transport NFA firearm (in limited cases)
Whether you're building your first SBR or your tenth, buying your first suppressor or adding to a collection, the same EFT file works every time.
Real Cost Savings
If you submit 5 Form 1s over the years, you'd normally need 10 FD-258 cards (~$50-75 in cards plus fingerprinting fees each time). With one EFT file, your additional cost for forms 2-5 is $0. The more you submit, the more you save.
Do EFT Files Expire?
No. The ATF does not impose an expiration date on EFT files. As long as your fingerprints haven't physically changed (due to injury, surgery, or severe scarring), your file remains valid indefinitely.
Some people ask about FBI specifications or format changes. While the FBI does update EBTS specifications over time, the ATF eForms system accepts files created under previous specifications. Files created today will work for the foreseeable future.
When You Might Need a New EFT File
- Severe finger injury: If your fingerprints are significantly altered
- Burn or scar damage: That affects the print pattern
- Lost file: If you didn't keep a backup (always keep backups!)
Normal aging, minor cuts, and everyday wear do not require a new file. Your core fingerprint patterns remain unchanged throughout life.
Best Practices for EFT File Storage
Since your EFT file is a valuable asset, protect it:
💾 Multiple Backups
Keep copies on multiple devices and at least one cloud backup. Don't rely on a single storage location.
🔒 Secure Storage
Your EFT file contains biometric data. Store it securely, encrypted if possible.
📧 Email to Yourself
Email the file to yourself as an attachment. It'll be in your sent/archive forever.
📁 Clear Naming
Name the file clearly: "YourName_EFT_2026.eft" so you can find it years from now.
Trust Applications: Each Person Needs One File
If you submit NFA applications through a trust, remember:
- Each responsible person needs their own EFT file
- Each person's file is reusable for that person
- If you add a new trustee, only the new person needs to create a file
- Existing trustees use their existing files
This makes trust submissions straightforward for repeat applications. Get everyone's EFT file once, then reuse for all future items.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse my EFT file?
Yes. Once you have an EFT file, you can use it for unlimited ATF Form 1 and Form 4 submissions. Your fingerprints don't change, so the same file works indefinitely.
Do EFT files expire?
No. EFT files do not have an expiration date. The ATF does not impose a time limit on how long you can use the same fingerprint file for eForms submissions.
Can I use the same EFT file for Form 1 and Form 4?
Yes. The same EFT file works for both Form 1 (making) and Form 4 (transfer) applications. It can also be used for Form 5 and other eForms submissions requiring fingerprints.
What if I lose my EFT file?
You'll need to create a new one. This is why we recommend keeping multiple backups in different locations. Always save your EFT file securely after creating it.
Can different dealers use my same EFT file?
Yes. Your EFT file works regardless of which dealer submits your Form 4. Just provide them with a copy of your file. You keep the original.
Will old EFT files work with new eForms updates?
Yes. The ATF eForms system maintains backward compatibility with previously created EFT files. Format updates don't invalidate existing files.
