Current wait times for Form 1 and Form 4 applications

⚠️ 2026 Application Surge Alert
The ATF received 150,000+ applications on January 1, 2026 alone — a 5,900% increase over normal daily volume of 2,500. This surge is due to the $0 tax stamp taking effect.
Estimated impact: Processing times may increase temporarily. We estimate 300,000+ applications will be submitted in January 2026 alone — more than the ATF typically receives in an entire year.
Current Average Wait Times
*Times are estimates based on community-reported data. Individual results may vary based on examiner workload, application completeness, and other factors.

Tips for Faster Approval
Use eForms, Not Paper
eForms consistently process 2-3x faster than paper submissions. There's no benefit to paper filing.
Submit Clean Fingerprints
Poor fingerprint quality can cause delays or rejections. Use a proper EFT file from SlapEFT to ensure NIST-ITL compliance.
Double-Check Your Application
Errors in serial numbers, measurements, or personal information cause delays. Review everything before submitting.
Use Correct Trust Documents
If filing as a trust, ensure all responsible persons are listed and fingerprinted. Missing RP documentation is a common delay cause.
Be Patient
Calling the ATF won't speed up your application. Check status online and wait for updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my ATF application status?
Log into the ATF eForms website at eforms.atf.gov. Your application status will show as "Submitted," "In Process," "Pending Research," or "Approved/Denied." You can also call the NFA Branch at (304) 616-4500.
Why is my Form 4 taking longer than average?
Several factors can cause delays: incomplete applications, fingerprint quality issues, background check flags, trust document problems, or simply examiner workload variation. "Pending Research" status often indicates additional review is needed.
Can I expedite my NFA application?
No. The ATF processes applications in the order received. There is no expedited processing option, regardless of circumstances.
What happens if my application is denied?
You'll receive a letter explaining the denial reason. Common reasons include: prohibited person status, incorrect information, or state law restrictions. You can appeal within 30 days or submit a new application after correcting issues.
Is individual or trust filing faster?
Processing times are similar. Trusts require fingerprints for all responsible persons, which can be more work upfront, but don't inherently take longer to approve.
How often is this page updated?
We update processing time estimates monthly based on community-reported approval data from forums, Reddit, and direct user reports.
