One of the best things about converting your fingerprints to EFT format: you only have to do it once. Your EFT file works for unlimited NFA applications, forever.
Yes, You Can Absolutely Reuse Your EFT File
Your EFT fingerprint file is a digital representation of your fingerprints. Since your fingerprints don't change, the file remains valid:
- ✓ No expiration date
- ✓ No limit on uses
- ✓ Works for any NFA application
- ✓ Use with any dealer
- ✓ Use for direct ATF filing
How Many Times Can You Use It?
Unlimited.
Many NFA enthusiasts have 5, 10, even 20+ stamps—all using the same EFT file from years ago. Some examples:
- First suppressor (Form 4)
- Second suppressor (Form 4)
- SBR build (Form 1)
- Another SBR (Form 1)
- Third suppressor from a different dealer (Form 4)
- ...and so on
All with the same .eft file.
What Applications Can You Use It For?
Form 4 - Transfer
Buying a suppressor, SBR, or other NFA item from a dealer.
Form 1 - Making
Building your own SBR, suppressor, or SBS.
Form 5 - Tax-Exempt Transfer
Inheritance or other tax-exempt transfers.
Multiple Dealers
You can use the same file with different dealers. Unlike some kiosk systems that lock you into their ecosystem, your EFT file works everywhere.
How to Store Your EFT File
Since this file is so valuable, store it safely:
Recommended Storage
- Cloud storage: Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud
- Email it to yourself: Always accessible
- USB drive: Physical backup
- Multiple locations: Don't put all eggs in one basket
File Management Tips
- Keep the original filename
- Don't edit or modify the file
- Back up in multiple places
- Remember where you stored it!
Rare Exceptions
There are very few situations where you'd need new fingerprints:
Finger Injury
If you have a serious injury that permanently changes your fingerprints (severe burns, amputation), you'd need new prints.
Name Change
Your fingerprints don't change, but if your name changed significantly, you might want new prints with the updated name to match your application.
Quality Issues
If your original FD-258 had poor quality prints and you got rejected, you'd need better quality prints (and thus a new EFT file).
The Math: Why One Conversion Makes Sense
| # of NFA Items | Cost with Reuse | Cost if New Each Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $10 | $10 |
| 3 | $10 | $30 |
| 5 | $10 | $50 |
| 10 | $10 | $100 |
One conversion = lifetime of use.
